By 1870 most mail transport had moved to the railroads. Packet and Steamboats continued to ply the waters of the Ouachita and Arkansas River until the late 1920's, but as a mode of mail transport, their job was essentially completed by 1900. In modern times, the Delta Queen passenger Steamboat had a contract mail station and took mail from passengers, cancelled with the boat name, and posted at ports along the rivers she sailed, including the Arkansas River.
